This unique collection of poems is a play on words. A vocabulary word is given and the author makes various phrases and sentences using the words from that vocabulary word.

Evaluation

At first, I found the format of this book to be incredibly confusing. I did not realize that the phrases underneath the vocabulary word were only using the letters from that initial word. This book would probably be more appropriate for third or fourth grade and would be an excellent activity for the students to take part in.  One of my favorite examples was the poem that was constructed using the letters from the word “pepperoni.” The phrase read “one pie no pepper no onion.” One lesson you could have fourth graders compete would be to have them write their own poem. They may choose to use their name as the vocabulary word, the name of a season, food, artist, musical instrument, etc. After writing the poem, the students could then manipulate the words and create their own illustrations on a white piece of paper. The teacher may use the artwork from these activities to start compiling the class poetry book to be distributed at the end of the year. This is also a great collection of stories for transitional purposes and a good motivator for students.
