We had our annual kickoff to school and due to the fact that this year and last year have been "The Year of Fred" particularly in the city of Pittsburgh, we had Mr. McFeely come talk to us and inspire us before officially beginning our school year. I found it quite special that the man whom I used to love on the Mr. Roger's show moved to the Fox Chapel area twenty some years ago and all three of his children attended school where I work. He talked about Mr. Roger's Neighborhood and the importance of teachers who inspire.
I have heard countless quotes of wonderment throughout my years. However, there was a quote today from Mr. Roger's himself (though through the mouth of Mr. McFeely.) The quote was as such: "Attitude cannot be learned but must be caught." It's a quote that I have never heard before. Even more, it is an interesting sentiment I have failed to think about. This idea that attitude can be taught is perhaps somewhat true. But I think that authentic attitude is modeled. In modeling attitude it means you are exhibiting your authentic one-of-a-kind personaity and true attitude, true excitement, true optimism and authenticity cannot be taught but must be caught in the air of the whimsy of the individual who is dedicating their life to spreading their love of life so others can catch this same whimsy.
We often talk about catching the common cold or catching the germs on the desks of our students who perhaps have not washed their hands in some time. And I think attitude must be spread and recognized, watched and passed on from others. Because just teaching someone how to do something is not enough. Afterall, if they don't see you with love on your own heart, then they will not be learning authentic attitude, one that opens doors and breaks down fences and climbs mountains leading to a better world and a better person.
