The glory of being a twin has always been one of the greatest whimsies of my life. Another person makes you better, makes you realize new whimsies and new perspectives, greater rainbows and renewed destinations. Born a twin, I may be a bit biased in unwraveling the true whimsy behind twinship, but I think even those closest to knowing who I am and what I stand for have already realized the whimsy in twinship. There is something remarkable about sharing a bond with another. Never once have I felt alone in my decisions or friendships or life adventures. Never once have a sought out a "best friend" or "someone to guide me on life's journey" because through twinship one already has a built in friend. It is as if you realize you have two hearts, two souls, two imaginations and two pieces of you. And people sometimes look at this as a bad thing. Don't get me wrong, we are certainly not shadows of eachother and have lifted our wings to pursue different passions in life, but there is still a magical thread that will always tie us together-that even I find sometimes difficult to put my finger on.
As I headed to Urban Impact to teach flute tonight, I was teaching a few of my students, one of which is an identical twin. Not only do they look alike, but their personalities are quite similar. In the middle of the lesson, the cell phone of one of the twins rang and the other twin happened to come into the room about the same time. They clarified that they had to talk to their aunt for "just a sec."
Well as impatient as I can be sometimes when I find their to be a greater mission at hand, I automatically became a bit disgruntled that their aunt was calling in the middle of their lesson. However, this annoyance soon became a rather whimsical moment when I looked over again and saw the two of them sitting side by side on the table, one phone between both of their hands, their heads together and a single earbud in each ear as they were talking to their aunt. On more than one occasion they said the exact same phrase (without hesitation) at the same time, smiling the same way, wearing the same expression- clearly enjoying every moment of this encouter together.
Perhaps you have heard the phrase "double the trouble." Well I believe it would be more accurate to describe such an encounter as "twice the whimsy." Twinship allows one to realize from an early age that there is always more this world than just YOU, that life requires the love of others, that we are called to be there for another and that life lessons are learned only when you open up your heart to the beautiful people beside you-because despite what we hear-there are beautiful people around every corner.
They may not become your "twin" but they can certainly model the twinship spirit of sharing love, joy and whimsy. Double the beauty. Double the fun. Double the miracles.
