Nothing soothes the soul more than a walk down cobblestone streets, a big glass of ice water, a small cafe table and a brunch of nutella, cinammon french toast. My good friend showed me this spot in Philadelphia entitle "Luna Cafe." As whimsical as it sounds, the atmosphere was just as whimsical. The vibe, the people and the food truly make a place. two days prior, I actually went to my first outdoor beer garden. From the outside it looks like a hidden forest complete with lush trees and vines and then hidden inside is a spot roaring with laughter and love. This whimsical jungle was probably one of my greatest highlights of the trip because the atmosphere was beyond brilliant.
We were watching the Women's World Cup on a big screen and the people seated at those picnic tables inside this magic garden were just so full of pride. There was one particular moment I probably will never forget. We were approaching the goal and this assist was made across the goal and it felt like time stopped just for an instant. You could hear a quiet "awww" in the anticipation that we had missed our shot on goal until one of our player sprinted and kicked it right into the corner. I stayed quiet because one of my favorite parts of being on this earth is watching the world react to wonder an awe. The entire picnic table we were close to stood and started screaming, there was simultaneous hugging and this chanting of "U.S.A." Probably the first time in a while I have heard resounding pride for our country without negativity. And you think to yourself-there is something about a common team or watching a common team or rooting for a common team with other people that heightens an experience. Makes it that much more enjoyable. Magical. Beautiful.
I dislike when others use the term "people watching" because it makes it sound like you are staring at another individual or making them uncomfortable. But there is something so interesting in "watching community." That term sounds better. And it just reaffirms the fact that it doesn't matter where we come from or what our intentions are or what we look like. Anyone can enjoy awe and wonderment when united by a common pride. Though I played soccer as a kid, and I'm slightly biased, there is such a community inside that game and around that game. Watch the community. Watch the community as they are eating their brunch, dressing up for a wedding, going to a game, enjoying a nice dinner, walking down the road, riding their bikes. Respond to their awe and wonderment. Don't miss those magical moments (inside or even outside the garden.) Community teaches you a lot. Sometimes in watching you learn as much as you would if you were talking in that community.
