As you walk through life, you start to remember familiar places through touch and feel and certain scents. I think the more familiar you are with an area, the more you begin to remember by scent and sight. When I go running, I do try to change up my route as they say this is better for your joints. However, I tend to enjoy this one 4 mile loop that allows you to go over bridges and through woods. It has a little bit of everything-some traffic for those who enjoy busy streets, smells of food for those who enjoy thinking about food while they are running, some river action, speed boats, a railroad crossing, highway rush, rowing, sandy and rocky surfaces, hills but also straight pathways. Like I said-it touches a bit of everything.
Running today, I noticed a familiar scent I always notice when I'm running-at a certain point around mile 2, I just smell a sweetness in the air. The best way to explain it is it smells like confectioners sugar of sorts or sticky cotton candy just lying on the asphalt. My nose seems like it is playing tricks on me because I always looks around expecting to see a candy wrapper or a trash can nearby, maybe even flowers, but I always find nothing. I do know though that the smell gets me going for two more miles though-it puts a smile on my face.
The memories you create through smells are truly beautiful. I guess what I'm trying to say is, if I didn't have my sniffer, particular during my running, I would be a little lost. The smells are just as much a part of the places you visit and the paths you run down than even the sights you see. But the combination of the two. Well, that makes for a truly beautiful memory.
