This particular book is about a girl named Amal and her life in Pakistan. She is unfortunately taken from her family by a leader in the community. She is to work as a servant under him until her family is able to pay back their debt. Certainly a clear look into the difficulties of indentured servitude that continue to exist today.

Evaluation

I greatly enjoyed this particular book as it gave much insight into Pakistan as well as the experiences of life in Pakistan for one family. The author did a wonderful job bringing to life a situation which many of us feel is part of a distant past. The emotions of Amal and the other servants around her are heart-wrenching at times, but their voices need to be heard. An excellent middle-grade novel that brings about a wonderful culture that many of us are not too familiar with. A truly beautiful book with raw emotions.
