Every year I attempt to attend as many band concerts and orchestra concerts as possible. One of my good friends happens to be the band teacher at our school and his work with the elementary students is nothing short of whimsical.

There is great beauty in supporting others for that is what we are supposed to do in our lifetime. Because supporting passes off a love and a whimsy unmatched by others. Support sharpens the mind, lifts the spirit and instills a fire beneath our feet that cannot be extinguished. Because when we support, we are passing the strength in the wings given to us by another and allowing another to experience His great flight. As I have found, there really is nothing more beautiful than watching another fly.

There was a moment in this concert that was quite breathtaking. Not only were messages of positivity and life lessons interwoven without the performance, but the closing performance of both the high school students and the elementary students on one particular song entitled "Havana" was simply jammin.' But what struck me as magnificent was this want to allow students to stand up and improvise. And he made it so very clear that the purpose of improvising was not to create the best solo, or the most remarkable, or even the best sounding. The purpose was to push students to get over their fear of playing in front of others. To spread their love and joy through mismatched notes and mistakes but also love and understanding and sincerity.

But I think when intentions are clear and the intention is to create an atmosphere of love, students always rise to the occassion. And every one of them did. Because in focusing on love and bravery, those notes came out as beautiful and angelic as ever. Improvisation in life may be one of the most important lesson we could ever learn. Because nothing ever goes as planned and if we constantly follow a script of our choice, there is not great whimsy in that. Imagination and creativity float around when new notes are chosen in fleeting moments. Allowing for risk. Taking a chance. Propelling us towards new. Standing up and speaking our song. Without that fear.
