There is nothing more beautiful than when you make such a long connection with an individual that time passes (months maybe even years) and you can "pick right back up where you left off." I was thinking about this today as I was able to meet with someone I have been friends with since 10th grade. And truly, we have never been in the same place since graduating high school, but we still manage to stay in touch and visit one another as best as we can.
It isn't necessarily the whimsy in "easy conversation" but rather the whimsy in this realization that for the most part, you have exchanged such deep ideas and critical conversations with this inividual, particated in so many ups and down, shared both laughter and tears that time passing is easily surmountable because it isn't anything you have not handled before. There are no difficult silences or reservations but silly jokes can be made without the worry of offending and loud slurps can be made when drinking milkshakes. Because somewhere deep inside you know that -that friend will always be your friend no matter what you say or what you do or what you wear. The whimsy in a relationship such as this is just one of unspoken understanding. Because even in the days and months that pass by and you maybe forget to call one another or forget to text back, there is an understanding and a warmth and support that continues to travel back and forth through unspoken words. There is a security in knowing they are always cheering for you and they do not have to say so or tell you so. Words are just exra in friendships such as these. The warmth can be felt in the silence.
Is there a secret in whimsical relationships such as these? You know, I haven't quite figured that one out yet. I think some personalities just naturally jive, some you have to work at and then they jive and sometimes you just come to the conclusion that even though the world has so many people running in so many directions, this friendship is something magical. Something whimsical. Something that reminds you of a time in the past or an individual that participated in one of the most transforming years of your life. And even though we will never be the same person we were today or two days ago or even years ago, I would like to think that the individuals that have painted a vibrant mosaic piece inserted on our heart are the ones that helped to create the ever-changing mural within us-well they simply cannot be forgotten.
If we pay attention, we learn who those artists are-we learn whose mosaic pieces have made our mural more progressive, more thought-provoking and we keep them close. Because these are the mosaics that allow us to keep dreaming. Keep loving. Keep believing.
