Today we woke up early to race to breakfast. The sky was just as sunny and blue as it was yesterday. We traveled to Cody, Wyoming where the famous Buffalo Bill Cody established a town named after him. On our way to Cody, many forests of trees were spotted. It was clear that many of the forests contained dead trees from the forest fire of 88. It may take 200 some years before this vegetation comes back.
We then ventured through the first national forest known as the Shoshoni National Forest named after the Shoshoni indians. We stopped after a bit to enter into Buffalo Cody's hunting lodge. It was quite a rustic lodge with very little lighting. Apparently it was the original lighting they preserved from long ago. We enjoyed a bit of Huckleberry chocolate- a treat from our tour guide. Huckleberries are not commercially grown. In fact, they are hand picked, which is why they are so expensive. It is a very time consuming process. Every store we have ventured through has had huckleberry jam, huckleberry chocolate, and huckleberry ice cream. It tasted quite sweet almost like a raspberry.
Buffalo Bill established this town of Cody. He grew up in the Midwest and his family was quite poor. However, his dream was to live in the West and become famous. He started out West. He was originally a scout in the Indian wars. Wild Bill was the true frontiersman, and Cody kind of stole his stories. He was the first to travel with the wild west show.
He performed for all the great dignitaries and made a ton of money. However, he ended up in debt at the end of his life despite his millions. He invited people from all over the world and lived quite lavishly. Buffalo Bill won a massive buffalo shootout and was able to keep his name Buffalo Bill. He is buried on Lookout Hill in Colorado.
We stopped for about three hours in Cody, Wyoming. We spent a larger portion of our time in the museum in Cody. The first exhibit we went through was mostly about Cody's life. He had four daughters, two of which died unfortunately of scarlet fever. This strained his relationship with his wife. Eventually, they ended up getting divorced. It was amazing to see all of the states and countries Buffalo Bill toured with the western show performers. Bill was also one to encourage women to vote and he also was peaceful regarding the Native Americans. There were many changes during this era going on in the world. In addition to this exhibit, we toured the western paintings, gun collections, wildlife and native american exhibits. All were quite informative.
That night we experienced a true western dinner. We met a gentleman by the name of Happy Pappy who had, at one point starred in a lot of western movies. Now, he entertains individuals on tour with a great dinner and storytelling and singing.
