A true story about two men named Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin who started out as members of the Teach for America Corps. Later, they created their own charter school entitled KIPP or the Knowledge is Power Program which now educates 16,000 students in 19 states.

Evaluation

As I was looking for an inspirational book to read over my winter break, I came upon this book and was immedietely intruiged. I have always wondered how charter and magnet schools begin, who starts them and what the process is like. Jay Mathews truly captures what it means to be a beginning teacher. I related well with both Feinberg and Levin as they set forth on a new journey that required long hours of work, anxiety and frustration. They sought to imitate more experienced teachers and learn new classroom management styes to use in the classroom. What I loved most about this story is that the two teachers constantly changed their techniques and their plans. No matter how many years they had been teaching, they continued to realize that all plans must be changed and tailored to the group being taught.
