I do feel bad I have not written in quite some time! I cannot believe that October has ended and November has just begun. This, by far, has been the quickest fall I have ever encountered. I recently started a Picasso Geometry Unit (last week) and I am extremely excited about what is to come. I have now taken over the math block and will continue to take over a new subject each week until my student teaching placement is complete. My last day is December 23, 2014.

I began my geometry unit by introducing Pablo Picasso to my students. Pablo Picasso was one of the biggest artists during the Cubism movement! The first week, we practiced locating and naming shapes, sides and vertices by looking at a Pablo Picasso Portrait. In addition, we practiced drawing hexagons, pentagons, right triangles, squares, rectangles and regular triangles in our Pablo Picasso Sketchbook. I put together a Picasso sketchbook for each student to make the drawing process exciting for them! They absolutely loved drawing in their sketchbooks.

The culminating activity for the Pablo Picasso Unit involved having the students draw a variety of (hexagons, pentagons, square, rectangle, triangle and right triangle) in their own "Pablo Picasso" style portrait. Afterwards, the students were required to count the total number of shapes used, the total number of sides and the total number of vertices using addition strategies practiced within the classroom. This culminating activity took about two days to complete. I must say, it was an excellent activity to practice counting vertices and sides as well as to practice writing addition equations.

Overall, I was happy with how this unit turned out. I do think that, in the future, I would probably include more time to have them draw in their Picasso sketchbook. We did have two drawing sessions together, but I think some of my students could have used more repetition when drawing their shapes.
