Probably one of the most beautiful things on earth is watching small preschool friends explore their universe. The way they see their world and interpret emotions and their creativity are really so far advanced-if we are too busy we might miss the fact that we may be the wisest beings when we are that small. Small in size but strength in mind.
It was about 90 degrees out today, and I was walking around taking pictures. I came upon the pre-K friends who were just making their way out into the foyer to collect some very large foam blocks to bring outside and make a spaceship. If you did not know what they were doing, you would have never guess they were trying to make a spaceship. But it didn't matter because these little souls weren't hindered by insecurities or doubts about what they were building. At this age kids have so much confidence. No creation is ever hindered by what others thing or lack of self-esteem.
So in the making of the announcement "It's now time to build our spaceship!" The following observations and speech were collected. Guarenteed, you will find whimsy in probably every encounter documented below.
1. "I'm going to collect the noodles. I'm going to collect all the noodles for now." (Completely missed the spaceship directive but that's okay.)
2. "Look over here. Look here. I'm building a train. I'ts so fast. It's like a space ship train. But it's a train. (A little closer to the directive...at least we began to build."
3. "Look let's get it so high so high." (Jumping up and down.)
4. "No that's mine! Give it."
5. "Everyone. Everyone right now. Everyone. We have a 5 minute warning and then clean-up"
Teacher: "Honey we just started building. Also, how do you know we have 5 minutes? Where is your watch?"
Student: Student looks down at her wrist. "I just know it is 5 minutes." (she begins to walk away)
6. "Alright time to take a picture." No no that way. Nope stay here. Not near the road."
7. "I'm going to take my noodles and bring them inside."
Teacher: It's time to take a picture now!
8. "Everyone smile!" (Student begins to scream!) "I don't want to take the picture. I don't want it." Teacher pulls the student out.
9. "Alright say cheese!"
10. (Teacher shows the picture to the group.) Student inquires calmly: "Why don't I see myself in the picture?"
Teacher: "Remember. You said you didn't want to take the picture. That just happened two minutes ago. (Student looks completely baffled.)
Just a reminder that we do not give our Pre-K friends or teachers enough credit in this world. Whimsy starts with the youngest minds. This may seem chaotic but hey. Whimsy is messy. In its most elementary phases, this is what love looks like. It isn't clean or perfect. It's not always full of joy. There are kinks and turns and much redirection. But it's whimsy. Like I said, everyone's spaceship must start somewhere.
