Volunteering through Urban Impact this year has been a truly wonderful experience. It's interesting because I was so hesitant to become involved in this ministry for fear that I "would not have enough time." However, I found that this ministry became a place of spiritual rest for me even when I felt exhausted. There were days, absolutely, where I jumped into my car, and I could feel the exhaustion take over me after a long day of teaching third grade. However, I would arrive, participate in Bible Study and watch the energy and the smiles of my kids, and I realized this was just the outlet I needed. Yes, I was still working with kids, but I was doing a work that brought a peace and calmness to my life. I had the great opportunity of working with excellent musicians and beautiful people, and I began to build a trust and a sense of friendship with my students.
Teaching flute definitely stretched me in a different way than the work I usually conduct within my own classroom. Working with mixed ages is quite challenging. In music, I would say differentiating instruction brings on a whole new level of challenge. In fact, I have even that much more of an appreciation for music teacher now than I ever did before. Working with students who are playing multiple instruments, but yet who all need different things is rewarding but such an enigma. For me, it was about teaching them to the best of my ability but also growing my relationship with them. It was evident that some of my students were not used to building trusting relationships. However, after a few weekend outings and a second semester of instruction, I began to build bonds that could not be broken.
I cannot wait to begin a new year in the Fall with this organization. They truly change the hearts of the students they touch.
