I was at Urban Impact tonight sitting on the third floor and one of the students experienced a nosebleed in the middle of a song. We went down to the first floor together to grab a drink of water, a wet paper towel and clean up his chin and the rest of his face. He seemed pretty unphased by the whole dilemma.
And sometimes when you are forced to take just a little break, you have the most wonderful conversations. We were sitting across from one another at the table and we were talking about school and the fact that he was in third grade and I am a third grade teacher. We talked about his friends and his favorite subject. I complimented him on his stellar improv drum skills to which he responded, "Thank you. I'm on the drum team at school. I just love it."
As the nosebleed was coming to an end and all was cleaned up, I asked him a simple parting question: "Are you excited for the weekend? It's almost Friday!"
"Well.." He hesitated a little bit. "Not really."
"Oh...why is that?" I inquired.
"Well, you see. I really like the week. I get to see my friends and eat lunch and have fun with my friends. I don't get to see my friends on the weekend."
And so as a teacher, I think this hit home hard. Because I have had many students in the past say the same thing to me, "Man..Mrs. A. I wish it wasn't the weekend." You always have to think about the fact that for many students, school is the best place. For many students, A Monday is much better than a Friday. For many students, school is what they consider to be home. So dear teachers who work day in and day out to make your students beautiful. To make your students feel loved and respected. To make your students feel powerful and knowledgeable. To make your students feel like there is a way out and they can reach the destination they want to reach with hard. Who sometimes have a bad day or think about quitting the profession, or who sometimes have a difficult time rolling out of bed on a Friday. You make the difference. You are the difference. You are the reason why a Friday is sometimes dreaded and a Monday feels like a fresh new day. Continue your journey. Because though some days may feel like a battlefield, remember that you are simpling battling for Him. Then it doesn't seem so bad.
