I have this tiny postcard I carry around with me wherever I go. I believe my brother and his now wife gave it to me when they visited California, but I try to make it the mantra that I live by. The postcard is entitled "How to Build a Global Community." The one that I have found is most important in every group of students I have throughout the year is the final line which states: "Know that no one is silent though many are not heard."
With 25 children, it has been a challenge this year, but I have found that I have focused more on this last global community mark than any other year. Perhaps it is because I feel the need to have the students practice their conversational skills more. Perhaps I just feel this feeling that we must gain trust and respect from our students and we do that by allowing their voice to be heard.
Voices that speak compliments
Voices that allow freedom
Voices that require respect
Voices that demonstrate confidence
Voices that dare to change
Voices that dare to question
Voices that help
Voices that lift up
Voices that collaborate and connect
Voices that contain fluidity
Voices that contain a humbleness about them
We have talked a lot about voice within characters and voice within ourselves and how the voice that we carry is precious and must not be taken for granted and must be used to change, to lift up, to heal, to ignite passion and to love. During this holiday season, I dare you to spend a few days analyzing your own voice. What have you done to love? to lift up? to inspire? to compliment? to ignite change?
In this world..your voice must work...
to be heard.
