The greatest adventure is one without a map.
Today was such an artistic adventure. We departed London and headed to Stonehenge. The rock formations were quite interesting. It was amazing that such a rock formation was built without stone tools. Interestingly, no one really knows why Stonehenge was built. It was said that the people probably originated from Scotland or near that area. In addition, they were most likely very well traveled. It could have been built for sacrifice purposes although radio carbon dating has shown that the people who built it probably were not Druids.
We also happened to visit the city of Bath. Now, this is a very commercialized area with shops and still the original architecture. We saw the actual water where people used to bathe together. Eventually, women and men were separated. In addition, we saw the hot water springs that sometimes rose up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. People did bathe for spiritual purposes as a soul cleansing. The waters were said to be from the Goddess Minerva. There was a special dressing room for women and men. There was a beautiful cathedral close by as well as shops and flowers and Italian ice cream places. It was one of the quaintest towns I had ever visited. The cathedral visited was beautiful and had an exhibit that caught my eye. There was a net with colorful butterflies and the artist expressed that this was to be a model of the great migration happening in America. If we see everyone as one people or one migration we no longer see the individual butterflies and all of a sudden culture loses its meaning completely. I thought this to be poignant and beautiful and something I which everyone was cognizant of.
Lastly, we arrived in Exeter. This was also quite a decorative town with a chapel as the focal point. People were enjoying the grassy area, there were streets that were cobblestone with colorful triangular flags. Many small passageways, brick covered with ivy, small lit cafes at night and so forth. We also managed to explore the garden with beautiful flowers and statues. It was clear that this quiet spot was popular amongst the people living here.
Things learned:
1. Europe has a serenity that I have not found elsewhere
2. Details are important and aesthetics. The cared for flower boxes outside taverns and decorated lights inside cafes.
3. The people are so very friendly
4. Great cultural variety of people ( quite refreshing to see)
