I envy those individuals who look put together and beautiful every day. The people who comb their hair or make sure their shoes are nice and shiny. I suppose I have never really given a whole lot of thought regarding fashion and outward appearance. And I have my own mother to thank for that I think because she was never one to constantly discuss clothes or how something fit or what her hair looked like. And so I always feel refreshed in knowing that my goal is to make sure I'm dressed-that's about it.
For those who are close to me, most are aware of my sock dilemma. I have this specific issue where I never wear matching socks. I wash my socks due to the nature of my odor-filled feet and then somehow, I lose the match. In fact, my brother was cleaning out his apartment this past weekend and left aside an entire pile (I kid you not) of mismatched socks. It truly is a problem. And let me tell you-I could not find any of the matches.
One day I was running around the school with my shoes off. The minute that bell rigns and the students are gone, I spend the next few hours running around in bare feet. I think sometimes it allows me to feel as if I'm running around on the beach (which is actually the carpet.) Regardless, it lifts the heart. Therefore, why not do it? One day as I was scurrying around, a parent happened to say hello to me, and he immedietely looked down at my feet and laughed hysterically. "Just so you know...you aren't wearing matching socks." "Oh I know." I replied back. "Always a rough morning trying to find the match." Today, my colleague notice one socks was coming out of my shoe and the other was way below my shoe. She said, "Please don't tell me you are wearing two different socks." "I am!" I said proudly. I walked off with a smirk.
If there is anything I can say it is this: my socks are a metaphor of my life. I don't want to be just one kind of sock or pattern or color during the day. In fact, I would rather be two. Also, who says a match has to actually be identical? Well it doesn't. And life is full of mismatched matches. Grace can coexist with havoc and creativity with assertiveness. So the next time someone comments on whether or not you appear to be matching, I urge you to strike up a conversation about the mismatched matches of life. I never to pretend to be matched because I would much rather display my mismatched wonders of the day. Afterall, one of the definitions of "match" is "to make or be harmonious." How do you make harmony? Certainly not with just two identical notes. Just some food for thought during this fine fine Tuesday.
