This journal entry is part two in my "someone once told me the grass was much greener...right where you are."

It was after teaching flute lessons on Thursday that I felt the grass I was standing on grow greener at my feet. Then when I was coming back home, a song came on the radio and the lyrics "Everyone's got to find that something to hold on to." So I came to the realization that the "something" I continue to hold onto is music. It's not a profession but it has served as a way for me to connect with students in a different community and have a way to communicate with one another.

Fake Milk. Fake milk? That's what we talked about during the middle of our flute lesson on Thursday. Two of the students were visibally having a "bad" day. One student opened up and talked about a "bullying" situation. Another student claimed her bad day was the result of a fifth grader shoving her in the hallways and yet the third chimed in and began complaining that the cafeteria serves fake milk. Hold on, Miss Bri, this doesn't sound productive at all. It sure was productive. Opening up about anything, including fake milk, is actually difficult for these students. If it wasn't for that "something" that "music" we play together week after week, this lovely conversation would have never occurred.

Find that something. It doesn't have to glitter gold. It doesn't have to be glamorous. But it does have to have meaning and you do need to find how you are going to channel that "something" into something good.

Find that something.

Hold on to it.
